OUTLINE OF THE NEW STUDY PROGRAMME IN 2021

Spatial Management was launched at the Faculty of Architecture, Wrocław University of Science and Technology in 1991. It was the first field of study of this type in Poland. This pioneering experience has become an element of our identity as a matter of undertaking the difficult challenges of the contemporary times. We look for new solutions and adapt didactic offer to the issues which are faced by our graduates.

The origin of the new taught master’s degree, launched in 2021, was the belief that contemporary settlement systems more than ever before should be resistant to various shocks and pressures. Local governments on every level are facing environmental, economic and social challenges, that require comprehensive knowledge, ability to synthesize a large amount of information, forecasting and reaching decisions when there is a conflict of interest. In that matter, graduates of Spatial Management should possess analytical, creative, methodological and negotiating abilities. They should also understand the social and intercultural conditions of their activity. They should be prepared to act as a manager who manages the development of cities, municipalities, counties, voivodships and countries. The new form of Spatial Management Master Degree’s study offers the knowledge and skills in five main fields:

  • pro-climate planning – as a response to environmental threats,
  • urban transformation – as a response to the change of dwellers’ expectations,
  • participatory planning – as a response to the growing aspirations to participate in the process of creation of a place to live,
  • digital technologies – as a response to the increase of complexity of phenomenon and the need to visualize them,
  • operational spatial planning – as a response to the need of implementation of vision and targets of space creation.

Paramount system of electiveness of courses is a guarantee of providing a comprehensive background to future graduates, who will be able to conduct advanced analyses and projects in different spatial scales.

ELECTIVENESS AND COMBINATION OF THEORY AND PRACTICE

The Spatial Management Master Degree’s studies at the Faculty of Architecture, Wrocław University of Science and Technology, consist of 3 sessions, that enable to obtain the title of Master of Engineering. The new taught of studies, implemented in 2021 is based on two principles: electiveness of courses and connection of theory and practice.  Thereby, the unique didactic offer was created for people who want to develop and perfect their abilities in management of processes of space development.  The first principle, which is ELECTIVENESS, means, that every student has discretion in creation of their own specialization within five thematical strands: pro-climate planning, urban transformation, participatory planning, digital technologies and operational spatial planning. During the studies, student can realize two whole chosen strands or discretionary set of courses from every strand, to gain ultimate armory of knowledge and abilities. Finally, the second principle introduce students to creative stage BETWEEN THEORY AND PRACTICE. Starting with the academical knowledge, students solve practical planning problems on the basis of achieved experience, to be able to critically evaluate theoretical concepts. The taught prepared in that way guarantees perfect preparation to various challenges that are faced by spatial planners.

DIDACTIC TEAM

The team conducting classes at the Master’s Degree in Spatial Management consists of 13 scientists representing various fields of spatial management. Among us there are outstanding practitioners who cooperate with the most important local government institutions of Lower Silesia and Wrocław (The Office of the Marshal of the Lower Silesian Voivodeship, The Wrocław City Hall). There are also valued theorists developing innovative research paths and conducting research within national and international projects (Horizon 2020 of the European Commission, OPUS of The National Science Centre and Fulbright Senior Award). Due to extensive contacts with planning institutions in Poland and abroad, we invite experts in the field of space management to conduct selected classes. The combination of great design experience with knowledge from scientific research makes the courses offered by us at the Master’s Degree in Spatial Management innovative, unique and allow students to develop both practical competences and a scientific workshop. In our classes, we use various didactic techniques, matched to the subject matter (e.g., problem-based learning, study walks, role play games, experiments and simulations). Our priority is an individual approach to each student and shaping a unique profile of the graduate.
